6th Annual Buried Treasure at the Altered Page – Throw Back Thursday

I’m so happy to be a part of Seth Apter’s 6th Annual Buried Treasure for bloggers.  Over on his page, The Altered Page, you will find a wonderful and inspirational list of bloggers favorite posts from the past.  It’s buried treasure of art bloggers! This was my first post of 2014 and one of my favorite canvases to create.

Have you picked a “word” for 2014 yet?  Something that you will focus on for the new year.  My word is “Grow”, and that’s in my personal life and professionally.  For my business and artwork it means trying new techniques, and getting out of my comfort zone.  So for my first mixed media canvas of the year I combined my mixed media layering with hand drawn doodling.

mixed media canvas, doodle on canvas, mixed media tutorial

I started layering with my favorite vintage dictionary pages.

I have to admit it was a bit scary drawing the doodles with permanent ink pens onto the canvas.  I figured that if it really looked bad I could simply paint over or add another layer of dictionary pages.
I added some stamping to finish it off and I’m happy with how it turned out.  It did take longer than I’m accustomed due to the intricate drawing, but I would definitely do another one.
Modeling paste and acrylic paint with a Scarlet Lime stencil from Christy Tomlinson, one of my favorite combinations.
Butterflies are my favorite subject matter.  All of my canvases and prints have a butterfly stamp on the back along with my signature.
Grow for the new year, now on to the next step in growing.
