Box Mail Art

This week I submitted some artwork to Somerset Studio magazine in hopes of getting it published.  But, as an artist and when you submit to an art magazine, you can’t just send an ordinary box, right?  So, I added some color and a little bit of me to the box before I sent it on it’s way.

I used washi tape on the top where I was going write the address. I didn’t want to make this side too busy, I wanted to make sure the post office could see the address.
The box was bigger than I really needed, so the sides were pretty big to fill up.  I used paints that were older and would need replacing soon.  I had just enough turquoise to cover this side.  I then used my 12″ x 12″ flower frenzy stencil to cover a large area with a vibrant orange.
I wanted to make each side completely different, but using techniques, stencils, colors and stamps that I loved.  On this side I used my own concoction of spray ink to give a dripping effect.  I mixed equal parts paint and water in a small spray bottle and it gave this wonderful drippy look.  I love, love butterflies!  I actually stamp a small butterfly to the back of all my work, it’s become my signature look.  So, you know I had to add butterflies.  I also have some packing tape that is very colorful.
On this side I used my town stencil from Tamara LaPorte and Artistcellar. The Stars are also from her stencil set.
I will admit, that by the time I got to this side I was getting tired.  So, that’s why it looks simpler than the others.
Mail art is really popular right now.  If you’d like to look at some examples, I have a Pinterest board you can check out here.
Hope you enjoyed it and it inspires you to send some mail art.
