Butterflies is one of my favorite subjects to use in my art, whether I’m working with mixed media, decoupaging a frame or a door hanger. There’s a sense of freedom with them, something so beautiful that went through a change and dreamed of something new. Dream is the message in my latest mixed media canvas. Let me take you through the creative process.
I started with a 5″ x 7″ deep edge, gallery wrapped canvas and added a layer of vintage sewing pattern tissue with gel medium. The tissue is so easy to work with and really inexpensive.
I love all the words, lines and arrows on the tissue. It’s almost like using stamps to add background.
The butterfly was cut from vintage music sheet paper and colored with soft pastels colors.
I then added some acrylic paint to the layer of tissue to give it more dimension. In the corner I stenciled a flower with modeling paste mixed with acrylic paint.
These deep canvases are 1.5″ deep and I love using all the sides. I wrapped the stencil around the corner to really give it dimension.
The final touches of stamps, burlap trim, chipboard hearts and the message of “Dream”
