Last week I purchased Joanne Sharpe’s book The Art of Whimsical Lettering because I really want to start doing my own lettering in my work as opposed to printing words out. So far, I’m really enjoying this book!
The first assignment in the book was to create a practice journal. So, I collaged a composition book I already had to use for practicing words and alphabets. The pages in this notebook are thin so I can’t use the thicker markers or it will bleed through, unless I adhere a couple of pages together to make them thicker.
But, I have been using some pages in my art journal to write some sayings. One of the things I love about Joanne’s book is that she gives you many phrases to use as prompts, so if you’re at a loss for what to write, you can look in this section.
Here I mixed font styles and upper/lower case.
I also use my doodle notebook.
One of the things I learned early into practicing is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. With each 15 minutes a day I spend practicing I’m getting better and that’s what matters to me. I’ve also started a Pinterest board to pin font styles that I like and would like to use in the future. You can check it out here.
Hope you enjoyed and I encourage you to give it a try.
